Fundación Artemisan ha publicado un nuevo vídeo sobre la sarna en la cabra montés, una enfermedad de la piel causada por un ácaro que no ha dejado de expandirse desde su aparición y que tiene efectos graves en las poblaciones de esta especie.

Aunque los primeros casos datan de finales de los años 80, en este reportaje se hace incidencia sobre la gravedad de la enfermedad en Aragón, dado que, desde su aparición en 2014 algunos municipios catalanes, en solo tres años, la enfermedad se extendió a Beceite y la zona de Varderrobles, donde acabó con una parte importante de la población de esta especie única y emblemática de la Península Ibérica.

Posteriormente llegó al Bajo Aragón, el Maestrazgo, Andorra, Sierra de Arcos y las Cuencas Mineras, donde prácticamente no queda ya un enclave sin afectación, habiéndose producido la muerte de miles de animales de esta especie.

A pesar de que es una enfermedad que se transmite entre distintas especies, entre ellas la humana, y que en algunas especies es fácilmente tratable, en la cabra montés puede tener consecuencias muy drásticas, provocando una muerte cruel tras causar engrosamiento de la piel, picor, dolor y lesiones graves que llevan a la muerte por inanición o por infecciones secundarias derivadas de las complicaciones de la sarna.

Al tratarse de una enfermedad densodependiente, que se transmite con mayor velocidad cuando hay mayor densidad de animales al multiplicarse la tasa por contactos, la correcta gestión de las poblaciones, unida a muchas otras medidas, es vital para proteger una especie que estuvo al borde de la extinción y que se recuperó gracias a su catalogación como especie cinegética.

El vídeo, elaborado por Fundación Artemisan con el apoyo de Bergara, arroja luz sobre la situación de la enfermedad y analiza, con distintos puntos de vista y testimonios, el futuro que espera a la especie y al tejido social y económico que se ha encargado de su gestión hasta la fecha.

Y es que, más allá de su propio valor medioambiental y su papel como ingeniera de ecosistemas, la cabra montés es un recurso fundamental en muchos municipios de España, especialmente en zonas rurales con pocos medios para susbistir, donde su caza genera empleo y riqueza para hostelería y servicios, así como numerosos puestos de trabajo, y también supone una fuente importante de ingresos para las arcas municipales que se traducen en mejoras para estos pueblos.

El control de esta enfermedad en la cabra montés sigue siendo un desafío y la controversia existente entre las medidas a tomar es notoria.
